When I merged two nearly bankrupt American law schools in 2011 to create the Harley School of Law, I was given only two or three months to survive. We had to wait until February 8, 2012, for the State of Maine to authorize us to teach and award degrees.
Some fifteen years later, with zero debt and a diverse student body, offers of partnership or even acquisition are multiplying.
I am a lawyer but also an entrepreneur. And for the Harley School, my strategy was simple: a structure based in the United States (benefiting from federal laws on academic freedom), state authorizations (providing credibility), and responsiveness to students' needs regarding financing and flexible teaching.
Milind Sate was the school's first graduate in 2014. The PhD in Intellectual Property awarded by the Harley School allows this entrepreneur to pursue a teaching career alongside his professional activities. Her public thanks to me fueled my determination to develop the school.
Today, I am pleased to welcome Saina Bazargan as International Development Manager.
